Covey of The Seven Habits of Highly Successful
People said it best when, in the aforementioned
book he said, “I began to feel more and more that
much of the success literature of the past 50 years
was superficial. It was filled with social image
consciousness, techniques and quick fixes—with
social band-aids and aspirin that addressed acute
problems and sometimes even appeared to solve them
temporarily, but left the underlying chronic
problems untouched to fester and resurface time and
again.” In this #1 National Bestseller, he goes on
to say, “In stark contrast, almost all the
literature in the first 150 years or so [in Covey’s
studying of self-help and success literature upwards
of 200 years into the past focused on what could be
called Character Ethic as the foundation of
success—things like integrity, humility, fidelity,
temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry,
simplicity, modesty and the Golden Rule.” Many of
today’s finest self-help masters and success stories
draw on this information because it is the finest

principles. Although some of these authors believe
in God and mention Him, none will try to sway

simply that: universal principles, much like the Law
of Gravity is a universal principle. |

information metaphysical in nature, and must I
change the way I think and behave? |

Trying
to classify this way of thinking is no
different that trying to distinguish the difference
in thinking between top sales people or low
performers, CEO’s or mail room employees, happy
people or the chronically depressed. One way of
thinking can simply be referred to as right
thinking, and the other—for these purposes—is not
right thinking. You are obviously here because
you have some interest in improving your life, to
some degree. Right thinking is thinking in line with
certain principles, beliefs and life goals. These
books were written and were consistent with what was
called the New Thought Movement, a movement in
thought (not unlike today) that began in the late
1800’s. This movement was too powerful for the
thinkers of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to
contemplate, but in today’s more open-minded
culture, this is simply described as “a better way
of living life.” Which is why I named our website’s
Better Ways In Life. |
